In a capitalist system, sustainable design often remains part of the established, profi t-oriented logic of exploitation and supports it. The series of Kräuterstoff workshops organised in June 2019 in cooperation with the Berliner Stadtmission tested critical sustainability approaches and networking. Together with the invited public, plants were collected, once loved but now redundant textiles were sorted and dyed. New value and life was given to the previously donated, unwanted clothing by dyeing these with urban plants and vegetable waste. Interesting results in terms of colour were achieved using dyes from overlooked plants growing in the public parks of Berlin. The aim of the Berliner Stadtmission is to realise several campaigns to save textiles from value-reducing processing and at the same time to invite artists and designers to deal with them creatively. The Kräuterstoff series marks the beginning.
