Fungi have a visible and an invisible life: the mushrooms above-ground, and the mycelium, the nurturing and waste digesting network underneath. In various projects it has been shown that both parts can be used to create durable and sustainable materials. To get a feeling about growing mycelium I started experimenting with planting it on various substrates and researching their behaviour. The first outcome is a DIY cultivation tool kit for restaurants, cafés or private households that can be used both for growing edible mushrooms and recycling organic waste, through which the waste experiences a kind of „second spring“. The project wants to raise awareness for the multiple functions and potentials of fungi within individual and industrial contexts. It is also a starting point for an ongoing investigation of their material aspects and their potentials within circular production systems.
