Ein Todestag wird oft begangen, indem die Angehörigen einer verstorbenen Person zusammenkommen und die Erinnerung an sie wachrufen. Neben dem Besuch des Grabes steht das gemeinsame Essen im Mittelpunkt des jährlichen Rituals. Als ein Element hierfür haben wir das Konzept einer Tischdecke entwickelt, die die Verbindung mit der oder dem Verstorbenen stärken soll. Denn meist ist uns die Allgegenwart des Todes nicht bewusst, und wir geben den Toten nur einen sehr geringen Platz in unseren Gedanken.

Die Motive auf der Tischdecke erscheinen weiß gestickt auf weißem Untergrund und können auf unterschiedliche Weise angeordnet sein, einzeln verteilt, in einem ornamentalen Muster oder als Fries. Sie zeigen Momente aus dem Leben der verstorbenen Person, Begegnungen, Gegenstände, Landschaften oder auch Zitate. So vermitteln sie ihre symbolische Anwesenheit, die sich vorübergehend mit der Welt der Lebenden überlagert. Um die Erinnerungswirkung der Tischdecke zu unterstützen, sollte jedes Mal auch ein Gericht zubereitet werden, das mit ihr in Verbindung steht.### How can our connection to the deceased be strengthened by a dining ritual with personalised elements?

The anniversary of a death is often marked by the coming together of relatives to recall memories of their loved one. In addition to visiting the grave, a focal point of this annual ritual is often a shared meal. As an element of the shared meal, we have developed the concept of a tablecloth, which should strengthen the relatives’ connection with the deceased. Most of the time we do not think of the omnipresence of death and the dead occupy only a very small place in our thoughts.

The motifs on the tablecloth are embroidered in white thread on a white background and can be arranged in different ways, spread out in an ornamental pattern or as a frieze. They show moments from the life of the deceased: encounters, objects, landscapes or quotes. In this way they convey their symbolic presence, which temporarily overlaps with the world of the living. Complementing the commemorative purpose of the tablecloth, a dish related to the deceased should also be prepared to complete the shared ritual.
